Services provided by the HER
The Historic Environment Record offers services to meet
the needs of a wide range of users.
Academic researchers
Our databases can be searched in a variety of ways so we can carry out
chronological and thematic searches. Our records are an index to further
sources of information, many of which we hold as copies in our supporting
collections of maps, photographs, journal articles etc.
Amateur archaeologists
We can provide information for local research. The Heritage Management
department also work to provide advice and support for local groups wishing
to carry out archaeological fieldwork.
Archaeological Contractors#
Understanding of the local historic environment is essential for any piece
of archaeological work and the information held in the HER is a vital
research tool. We provide information to contractors for a variety of
purposes from desk-based assessments to research ahead of fieldwork projects.
All resulting reports are submitted to the HER and we ensure that, where
appropriate, the results of these are made accessible.
Developers and Commercial consultants#
We provide information at a variety of levels for use in archaeological
assessments. We also offer an enquiries service for proposed development
areas. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.
Local study groups
The records are searchable by location so we can provide information about
the historic environment of your local area. We hold a range of supporting
information, such as historic maps of the region. We can also provide
talks and presentations on aspects of the local historic environment.
Metal detectorists/Finds identification
We are a recording organisation for the Portable Antiquities Scheme and
liase with individual metal detectorists as well as local metal detecting
clubs. We also identify finds brought in by members of the public. Objects
are always returned to the owner*, but a record is made in order to inform
future researchers.
Schools and universities
We provide work-placements for local school pupils and for university
students.
