Hendre Road, Pencoed, Bridgend 2003Dyfed Archaeological Trust carried out a rescue excavation on the site of a
medieval and post-medieval farmstead, Cae’r-llysi, during a residential
development by Redrow Homes (SW) Ltd. on land at Hendre Road, Pencoed,
Glamorgan (SS948817), in 2002. Previous assessment and evaluation had
indicated that the site had been occupied from the medieval period through
to its eventual abandonment in the mid 19th century. Pre-excavation damage
had removed most of the site, but enough evidence, including parts of
two medieval drains, was recovered to confirm the long occupancy at Cae’r-llysi.
Traces of an 17th or 18th century building were also recorded, along with
other features relating to the development and use of the site as a small
dairy farm. Project contact: Nigel Page
