Early Medieval sculptured stones assessment
This is a pilot project to identify the condition of
the early medieval inscribed stones and stone sculpture of Pembrokeshire,
their location, ownership and method of storage and presentation and to
identify any threats. It will facilitate the future preparation of costed
management recommendations that will then be submitted to the National
Committee for the Recording and Protection of Early Medieval Inscribed
Stones and Stone Sculpture. The initial assessment of early medieval stones
resulted in a list of 40 ‘at risk’ stones. The groups of stones
in Penally parish church and St Ishmael’s parish church were identified
as target groups.
April – September 2005
The project proposals for the groups of EMS in Penally
parish church and St Ishmael’s parish church have been progressed
during Spring and Summer 2005. At St Ishmaels, there may be the opportunity
to build the proposal in with a major bid for church consolidation work,
which will be progressed once the new incumbent is installed in September
2005. At Penally, the proposal has been discussed with the vicar and churchwardens
who will present it to the PCC in due course.
