Archaeological Field Evaluation

Dyfed Archaeological Trust is well-placed in advising you on the potential archaeological impact of your proposal, and in offering practical mitigation solutions should the need arise.

An archaeological field evaluation will usually consist of the excavation of a number of trial trenches in order to evaluate the presence, extent, character and importance of any archaeological deposits within the proposed development area. A geophysical survey prior to trench digging may form part of the field evaluation exercise. The results of an evaluation are presented within a comprehensive report, which sets these results within their local, regional and national context, and can be used to inform a programme of mitigation, such as excavation, in the event of significant archaeological deposits being uncovered.

Dyfed Archaeological Trust has wide experience of this type of project and can call on a variety of specialists, such a geophysical surveyor, artefact investigators, palaeoenvironmentalists and radiocarbon laboratories to ensure a complete and fully informed evaluation service.

Our written schemes of investigation conform to the Standards and Guidance laid down by the Institute of Field Archaeologists, and are always conducted to best archaeological practice. Our specifications will therefore always meet with the approval of the Planning Authority, thus ensuring a smooth and efficient outcome to your planning application.
