NATIONAL ARCHAEOLOGY WEEK COMPETITION ANSWERS

The aim of the competition was to match up the images of modern day objects with their archaeological counterparts.

ANSWERS

 

 


A – 6 – This is a fragment of Samian ware, high quality Roman table-ware
B – 7 – This is the spout of a medieval jug
C – 10 – This is a Bronze Age palstave, a type of axe
D – 9 – This is a piece of Roman brick
E – 8 – This is a fragment of Roman floor mosaic
F – 3 – This is a prehistoric flint blade
G – 11 – This is a coin of Richard III (1452 – 1485)
H – 1 – A tricky one, this is part of a Roman trumpet brooch
I – 4 – Also tricky, this is a prehistoric flint ‘scraper’
J – 2 – This is a Roman ‘amphora’ handle. Amphorae were containers for storing wine, olive oil etc.
K – 5 – This is a fragment of a Roman ‘mortaria’, used for grinding foodstuffs
L – 12 – This is a medieval pilgrim’s ‘ampulla’, filled with holy water from a shrine and hung around the neck, probably on a piece of leather.
